Championing Justice Beyond the Courtroom: Betz Law's Commitment to Pro Bono Service and Access to Justice in Charlotte

The Organizations That Make It Possible

Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy has served the region for more than fifty years, assisting over 10,000 individuals each year facing crises of safety, shelter, health, and income — while more than 300,000 people in the region qualify for services but cannot afford private counsel. The organization is the largest provider of legal assistance in Mecklenburg County improving healthcare access for vulnerable populations, and the largest non-profit provider of representation in the Charlotte immigration court in all of North and South Carolina. Legal Aid of North Carolina stands with survivors and vulnerable families statewide, fighting to clear the legal barriers — unlawful evictions, discrimination, suspended licenses, domestic violence, loss of vital benefits — that keep hardworking North Carolinians from supporting themselves and their families. For every dollar invested in Legal Aid NC, the state saves nearly eleven dollars in emergency services, social welfare, and law enforcement costs.

Congratulations to Larissa Mañón and her team at Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy, and to Ashley Campbell and her team at Legal Aid of North Carolina, for the extraordinary work they do every day. Leading these organizations requires tenacity, compassion, and operational discipline in service of clients who are often in the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Charlotte is a better city because of them.

Pro Bono at Betz Law

This sponsorship represents a full-circle moment for the firm. Before founding Betz Law, firm founder Demian Betz served as Chair of Legal Aid Charlotte's Local Advisory Council and Chair of the Wells Fargo Legal Department Enterprise Pro Bono Steering Committee, where he fostered partnerships between global law firms' pro bono programs, national legal aid organizations, and local pro bono offices to expand access to justice for underserved populations.

Demian's personal pro bono practice has included representing migrant families in asylum and child custody proceedings, aiding domestic violence survivors in obtaining protective orders, providing estate planning for military veterans, and counseling disaster survivors on critical legal matters. Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy recognized that work with its 2017 Outstanding Individual Pro Bono Service Award, and the Charlotte Business Journal named Demian a Legal Leader and a finalist for the 2018 Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Service Award.
